Auckland and Blues back Gareth Anscombe has been signed up by current Super Rugby champions the Chiefs after his surprise exit from the Blues.
Anscombe enjoyed strong form during the ITM Cup but was dropped last month by new Blues coach John Kirwan.
Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said that he was looking forward to working with twenty-one-year-old Anscombe.
"We initially were not looking for a first-five, but when a player of Gareth's quality becomes available, we were quick to snap him up," Rennie told Fairfax NZ News.
Anscombe made his Super Rugby debut for the Blues last year in 2011 and has played for Auckland in the ITM Cup since his first year out of school in 2010.
The playmaker was the top points scorer at the IRB Junior World Championships in 2011 and when he was dumped by Kirwan he said he was "gutted".
"I was really disappointed ... gutted ... but that's rugby sometimes."
Anscombe has a passport that would permit him to play for Wales but he says that he wants to stay in New Zealand so this contract should see him achieve that for at least another year.
